The Valley
Fort Valley is a 23 mile secluded valley nestled between the northern arms of Massanuten Mountain. Lying within the Shenandoah Valley, it is locally known as "the valley within a valley." Passage Creek has sculpted the mountain to allow only a few access points, solidifying its seclusion. During the Civil War, iron ore deposits were mined and instrumental in creating metals and materials for the confederate army munitions. This, along with its mountainous walls and limited entry, lent to the name Fort Valley. After the Civil War, the demand for the valley's iron vanished and the valley became an agricultural based region.
